Key Properties
Cheaper than Polycarbonate with 80% of impact resistance.
Similarly low wear resistance and toughness as Nylon.
Dimensional stability and minimal creep of ACETAL.
Low friction. Low moisture absorption. Can be used
with foodstuffs.
Strengths
- High mechanical properites (stiffness, hardness
and toughness)
- Broad range of use temperature (from -40 to 130°C)
- High resistance to creep and fatigue
- Low coefficient of friction
- High wear resistance
- Good insulating properties
- Low water absorption
- Good chemical resistance, in particular with oils
and lubricants
- Optical transparency
- Easy to fabricate
- Ability to be sterilized
- FDA compliant
- Easy to form
Limits
- High shrinkage (~2%), due to its high crystallinity
- Attacked by oxidizing or strong acids and strong
bases
- Low resistance to UV and gamma radiation
- Flammable, releases some formaldehyde (highly
odourous)
- Opaque
- Cannot be used above 60 - 66°C

PET(G) is current available in clear only.
Some thinner thicknesses of the sister polymer APET
are available in an "Anti-Reflective" finish
which is also called "Anti-Glare".
