Key Properties
A hard thermoplastic. Tough (maintains impact resistance
at low temperatures). Easily processed & may be
electroplated. Easily bonded. Good gloss surface finish.
Used in preference to PVC for high (50°-70°C)
or low (less than –20°C.)
Strengths
- High rigidity.
- Good impact resistance, even at low temperatures.
- Easily processed (may be electroplated).
- Good insulating properties.
- Good weldability.
- Good abrasion and stain resistance.
- High dimensional stability (low water absorption).
- Good paintability and platability.
Limits
- Poor weathering resistance.
- Ordinary grades burn easily and continue to burn
once the flame is removed.
- Scratches easily.
- Poor solvent resistance, particularly aromatic,
ketones and esters.
- Can suffer from stress cracking in the presence
of some greases.
