Key Properties

A hard thermoplastic. Tough (maintains impact resistance at low temperatures). Easily processed & may be electroplated. Easily bonded. Good gloss surface finish. Used in preference to PVC for high (50°-70°C) or low (less than –20°C.)

Strengths

  • High rigidity.
  • Good impact resistance, even at low temperatures.
  • Easily processed (may be electroplated).
  • Good insulating properties.
  • Good weldability.
  • Good abrasion and stain resistance.
  • High dimensional stability (low water absorption).
  • Good paintability and platability.

Limits

  • Poor weathering resistance.
  • Ordinary grades burn easily and continue to burn once the flame is removed.
  • Scratches easily.
  • Poor solvent resistance, particularly aromatic, ketones and esters.
  • Can suffer from stress cracking in the presence of some greases.

Warning

Due to its hygroscopic nature ABS may require drying before processing. Dry at around 70 oc for about 75 minutes per mm thickness to prevent blisters when thermoformed.
